Costumes, Props and Set Dressing (Mise-En-Scene)

Costumes

  • Main character will require three costumes. Firstly pyjamas, for when the character wakes up in the morning. This will either be traditional striped attire, more modern sense of boxers and a tee shirt to help anchor the time period or themed pyjamas to add a sense of humour to the scene. Next will be what the main character wears for the majority of the film, a superhero outfit. This will most likely be purchased, my pro choice is a Spider man costume however a Superman costume could also be purchased amongst many others. These would be better than making a costume form scratch as I would save time in not needing to create a superhero, also using a costume people can instantly recognise will make the audience relate to the character as well as draw in fans of that character and provide a clear inter textual reference. The last costume that will be used for the central protagonist will be a hospital robe when he finds himself in an empty corridor, this is one piece of clothing which would be better if made by hand as finding a hospital robe may be difficult and with this only being an A level project I am working on a tight budget. Yet if necessary one can be purchased from a fancy dress shop along with the super hero costume.

  • Costumes for the remaining characters are as followed. For the female character smart casual attire will be acceptable, anything that will make the character appear older than she is, but is within belief. The secondary male characters will be dressed to either stereotypical gangsters or chavs. Which will mean either excessive baggy clothing with large amounts of jewellery and a baseball cap or a tracksuit with some form of branded sports shoe. And for the extras other superhero costumes will be used, in this case so avoid a large bill costumes can be made or borrowed from a fancy dress shop as they wont need to become damaged or worn for long periods of time.

Props
  • Not many props are needed in my production but the ones that will be used are crucial towards the narrative. For when the central protagonist tries to solve the crime several props will be needed, depending on which scenario I follow. If i persure the idea of an miss interpreted exchange then I will need to make something that appears to look like an illegal substance whether it be drugs or alcohol. It would probably be more sensible to go with the alcohol route, which would also require a polythene bag, used to conceal the identity of the contents. Or maybe a brown paper bag as this would be more recognisable towards and American market.
  • If I pursue a miss interpreted mugging a handbag will be required for the female character, which i can easily get hold of via my fellow peers.

    Set Dressing

    • During the hospital scene I want a sign to create exposition to where a bouts the character has ended up. This could either be purchased from an industrial shop  from the internet or created via adobe photo shop elements. Also the walls preferably should be white to signify the characters lack of awareness to his current situation.
    • Set is important to making a film believable so I am being rather choosing when it comes to what is in the set. For where the crime occurs, I want graffiti to be around so some planning may be needed to achieve this legally. My best option would be to find a suitable urban location which has reasonable amounts of graffiti, just to give the mise en scene an industrial gritty feel, making the area appear a bit more rough and in need of a crime fighter.
    • For the bedroom scene at the begging I want posters on the walls of superheroes and films related with these, to create clear visual inter textual references. Also a wardrobe with a mirror would be helpful so I can achieve the shot whilst looking into a mirror to reveal another character.

After searching the web for a suitable costume I turned to e bay and found a vast choice. having Spiderman in mind I searched under this criteria and as a result, I am now in possession of a costume, costume £22.99.
