Basic Effects
Adding text....
Adding text to iMovie, is not an issue but now that we have upgraded to final cut express I needed to learn all of the basics again from scratch. However this process in final cut is extremely simple.
- Load up the project you wish to add the text into.
- Once completed, move the mouse over to the left video box.
- In the bottom right hand corner of this box ther e should be a small logo, that appears as and A with a film strip effect around the sides.
- Just to the right of this there should be a small drop down arrow option, select this.
- This will open up a vast amount of options, however we are just focussing upon adding simple text.
- There should be a total of six options, you are looking for TEXT, which is located fifth from the top.
- It should then appear in the viewer box above.
- Then you need to position this onto the timeline where you want it, to do this simply click somewhere within the viewer and drag to the designated position.
- To customize the text, click on the CONTROLS tab which is located at the top of the viewer in use. And then enter the desired text into the box which has sample text written in it. (Remember to delete sample text before adding your own.)
- Through out this tab you can alter the text in a variety of ways changing the font, size, colour, positioning and alignment. And many more.
- To have this text over a piece of footage simply move it above the clip you want it to play over and then you are done.
I figured this process out via the use of Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop, but to clarify this process in a more visual manner that you can follow I will embed a YouTube instructional video.
Bad Tv and Add Noise.....
To gain some of the concepts that I had in mind I looked into finding an un tuned television efftect,
that would be used to interlink settings and create a sense of narrative enigma. From using final cut
I found two combined effects that gain this aesthetic. Theses being bad tv and add noise.
To apply these is a simple process. All you need to do is double click on the section of film or
still that you wish to apply the effect upon. The once you have done this select the effects tab.
Choose video filters and form this there will be a large list of options, located in stylise is both the
bad tv and add noise effect. You can only apply one at a time. To alter these double click the clip
again and access the various tabs a the top of the left hand viewer. From this you can alter the effect
to meet your needs. To see this effect in use watch my final cut and throughout the film you should
see them in use. Adding noise first being introduced at 1 minute 22 seconds and Bad Tv appearing
at 3 minutes 5 seconds onwards.

Smoother Edits....
From feedback some of my editing appeared slightly rough and
needed fine tuning to do this I applied
needed fine tuning to do this I applied
various transitions. To apply a transition using final cut takes seconds.
- Have footage in the time line, that you wish to apply a transition.
- Make sure these are snapped together.
- Selected the break in footage where you wish to place the transition.
- Then go to the effects tab and select video transitions.
- From this there is a vast selcetion.
- Try several out and see which works the best.
- However after each choice you much render the clip.
After some audience feedback on the footage I screened at the creative arts evening
It was brought to my attention that a voice over would be helpful. I added in the words
'Hey what are you doing out of your room?' as it signifies that the character is in some form
of institution and his location is almost a dream.

Beneath is the footage with and without the voice over.
No voice over.

I have also completed another section, named styles and effects, which includes
further details on the effects I have included to my production.

If I could, re film this footage I would aim to alter the white balance to see if it would alter the white
balance to see if it would improve the aesthetic quality.
As well as this I would take a wider variety of shot types so.
I have more footage to fall back upon and finally I would have used the boom mike,
as it would have excluded un wanted background noise, such as the
wind when filming outside.
