Soundtrack

I would like three pieces of music to be played diegetically throughout my short film. A comical, upbeat and tense piece.

Comical: I want a non-diegetic soundtrack to be played during the opening. I would like it to be rather upbeat, bubbly and have a positive feel towards it. As the genre of the film is supposedly a comedy thriller. The piece needs to grip the audience, and be catchy so after viewing the film if they will hum this tune and hopefully because of this make the piece easily recognisable. Mimicing the sytle of such films as Superman. Also the beat needs to be steady and notes can't be drawn out as no tension or suspense is to be built up. The instruments used would be orchestral in major keys so to create a positive atmosphere.

Upbeat: For the sequence when the central protagonist attempts to solve a crime , think the best style of music would be an up beat edgy adrenaline pumping sound. Something that accompanied with past paced editing will keep the viewer constantly entertained. Perhaps opting for some heavy metal or fast paced drum and bass, but with this style it may need to be toned down to make the non-diegetic music appeal to a wider audience. Either way it needs to fit in with the pace of a fight sequence and when the central protagonist approaches the scene of the crime, so the audience gains the impression that something in the narrative is about to kick off.

Tense:For the final sequence a tension building soundtrack would prove very effective. I want the audience to feel the same emotions as the character is feeling, to do this i would like long drawn out strings to give an intense feel causing a loss of breath, with a fast tempo in the bass to increase the heartbeat.

To create these I have several options, I could make the soundtracks my self using garage band, download an un copy written piece from the internet or have a music student or someone with a passion for creating music make me what a require. After attending the co-op film festival I have gained further knowledge on the program of garage band so this option wont be ruled out, however I don't see myself as the most musically gifted person. Therefore I would prefer the other two options, putting a piece made for me over a downloaded track. It would be best have an original soundtrack as I have full control, in how it works with what is going on on-screen and how it fits with the pace of the narrative, which is difficult to time on a pre made piece. As well as this it may improve my overall grade due to my creative input.

Below are the soundtracks used in the film.

  • A track which is used in the end sequence when the character is in a state of confusion.
  • A grime tune, for the fight sequence to give it that aspect of grit and toughness.

  • A hip hop track to give and urban vibe, as the protagonist decides to take a trip to Leeds.

  • Finally here is the track used for the morning sequence, which is used to create a hype, but set a fast tempo.

All of these tracks were produced by Ollie Roberts, who also is in sixth form and is taking A2 Music. From his contribution to the project he is able to gain experience from working with others, and expand his portfolio.
